I was always fascinated by astronomy. I loved going out at night to stare at the sky and locate planets and constellations. Camping trips with the family made this even more fun. Growing up in Michigan gave me plenty of opportunities to enjoy still, clear nights with little or no light pollution, so I could spend hours just looking into the heavens and identify the various sights. It also gave me a chance to learn not just the classic names and stories of those celestial objects, but also those from the First Nations.
The pieces in my album „stargazing“ relive some of these memories from my childhood and youth. I have chosen to use the Ojibwe interpretations as their presence and influence can be felt throughout the Great Lakes. Several pieces tell a specific story, others are spontaneous memories. You will see the equivalent classic interpretation in parentheses next to each title.
The stories behind Ojibwe astronomy are truly wonderful, I encourage you to search the internet to learn more.
